Pregnancy as a Pakistani-American Woman: What Nobody Tells You

Humera Naeem By Humera Naeem · · 2 min read

Nothing prepared me for how lonely pregnancy would feel in America. In Pakistan, pregnancy is a community event. Your mother is there. Your sisters. Your mother-in-law. You are surrounded and celebrated from the first trimester. In Maryland, with no family nearby, I cried through my first trimester almost every night.

Finding a Pakistani or South Asian OBGYN

This changed my second pregnancy completely. She understood my questions, my family’s advice, and my cultural context. The appointments felt like conversations with someone who actually understood my world. Search for South Asian OBGYNs in your area — it is worth the extra effort.

Building Your Village

  • Pakistani and Muslim mom groups on Facebook — search your city name plus “Pakistani Moms”
  • Your mosque community — announce your pregnancy and people will show up with food
  • Pakistani grocery store regulars — some of my closest friends came from conversations in the desi grocery store

Getting Family Support From Pakistan

Fly your mother here if you can — even for six weeks around the birth. If a visit is not possible, schedule daily WhatsApp video calls. The presence of your mother’s voice, even through a screen, matters more than you can imagine.

You are not alone in this. If you are going through a pregnancy in America right now and feeling isolated — message me. I mean it. ☕
