Facing Islamophobia in America: How I Respond as a Hijabi Pakistani Mom

Humera Naeem By Humera Naeem · · 2 min read

I want to have an honest conversation about something that does not get talked about enough in our community: the everyday experiences of being visibly Muslim in America.

Most of my experiences in Maryland have been positive. Americans are mostly kind, curious, and respectful. But there have been moments — a comment at the grocery store, a look held too long — that I carry with me.

Raising Children Who Are Proud, Not Apologetic

This is my primary concern as a mother. I do not want my daughter to someday wear hijab and feel she has to defend it. I want her to wear it with the same ease and confidence I feel.

How we respond to prejudice at home shapes this. If I come home reacting with anger or shame about being Muslim — my children absorb that. If I come home and say “someone was ignorant today, but that says nothing about my worth” — they absorb that instead.

My Response Framework

  • Do not absorb the energy — most comments come from ignorance, not genuine malice
  • Correct gently when possible — “I wear hijab by choice and I love it” said calmly is powerful
  • Walk away when necessary — not every situation deserves your energy
  • Document serious incidents — workplace and housing discrimination is illegal. Report to CAIR.

Being a visible Muslim woman in America requires courage I did not know I had. Our faith is not a limitation. It is our superpower. ☕
