Nobody warned me how hard making friends as an adult immigrant woman would be. In Pakistan, my social world was built over decades. I arrived in Maryland and had to start from zero.
Why Adult Friendship Is Hard in America
Americans are friendly but not always easy to become close with. The social structures that create proximity and shared experience — which naturally lead to friendship — work differently here. No extended family gatherings where you meet new people. No neighborhood community the way Pakistani mohallas work.
Where I Actually Found Real Friends
- My mosque — This cannot be overstated. The women at my Islamic center have become my American family. We share food, childcare, celebration, and hardship.
- My children’s school — Volunteering at school events put me in regular contact with other parents.
- Pakistani community events — Independence Day gatherings, iftars in Ramadan, cultural events.
- Facebook groups — “Pakistani Moms of Maryland” connected me with 50+ women in my situation within weeks.
- This YouTube channel — I have made genuine friendships with viewers. The community that grew from Coffee with Humera has become one of the most meaningful parts of my American life.
When you find your people — your Maryland desi sister circle — it is everything. ☕
