Our Eid Preparation Starts One Week Before
- Mehndi night for the girls — we video call cousins in Karachi while applying henna together
- Pakistani clothes — we buy from local desi stores or order from Pakistan two months in advance
- Full home decoration — crescent lights, Eid mubarak banners, flowers
- Cooking prep begins two days before — sheer khurma, mithai, kheer
Eid Morning
Everyone wakes for Fajr. Children get dressed in Eid clothes before breakfast — non-negotiable in our home. Husband goes to mosque for Eid prayer. I prepare sheer khurma, halwa puri, and fresh chai.
The Community Celebration
Our mosque hosts an Eid gathering. Our children see hundreds of other Muslim families celebrating together. They see that they belong to something much larger than our household.
Creating New Traditions
Our Eid traditions blend Pakistani customs with Maryland innovations. Family photo every Eid in front of our decorated house. Donate to charity as a family. Something special with the kids — Eid at the National Zoo became our tradition. These are OUR traditions now. ☕
