Washington DC with Kids: A Muslim Pakistani Family Travel Guide

Humera Naeem By Humera Naeem · · 1 min read

Living in Maryland means Washington DC is our backyard. It took us a full year to actually explore it properly as a family. Do not make that mistake — DC is one of the greatest free museum cities in the world.

Best Free Museums for Pakistani Kids

  • Natural History Museum — dinosaur bones and ocean hall. Kids are mesmerized for hours.
  • Air and Space Museum — science-loving kids will never want to leave.
  • National Zoo — completely free, the panda exhibit is always a highlight.
  • African American History Museum — important for our children to understand American history. Reserve tickets in advance (free).

Halal Food in DC

  • The Halal Guys — multiple locations, always reliable
  • Many food trucks near the National Mall — check HalalTrip app
  • Pack your own iftar if visiting during Ramadan — the Mall is a beautiful outdoor space

Prayer Facilities

The Islamic Center of Washington on Massachusetts Avenue welcomes visitors. Several Smithsonian museums have quiet rooms. Always bring your prayer rug.

Practical Tips

  • Take Metro from Maryland — parking is expensive and stressful
  • Go on weekdays — much less crowded than weekends
  • Start early — museums get crowded after 11am
  • Pack desi snacks from home

DC is a city that will make your children proud to be American — while you remind them of where they also come from. ☕
